A teenage driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel Monday night, authorities said, causing a two-vehicle wreck and snarling rush hour traffic on Buford Dam Road.

According to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s report, the wreck occurred about 5:45 p.m. near where the road meets Lakeside Trail.

Dijana Bubanja, 19, of Buford was traveling west on Buford Dam Road in a Toyota Avalon when she reportedly nodded off at the wheel and drifted to the side of the road, the report said.

According to the report, Bubanja attempted to get back on the road, but overcorrected and struck an eastbound GM Denali driven by a 47-year-old Forsyth County man.

The truck tumbled and landed on its side in nearby woods while the car went off the road and struck a tree.

According to the report, Bubanja said she’d fallen asleep.

She was charged with failure to maintain lane and taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth for evaluation.

The other driver was not taken to a hospital, the report noted.
