NORTH FORSYTH — A local cell phone store will be offering more than smart phones and hi-tech gadgets on Saturday.

Verizon Wireless, 3840 Keith Bridge Road in north Forsyth, is participating in a backpack giveaway from noon-3 p.m.

The first 200 students who show up will receive a free backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and other supplies.

TCC, the largest Verizon retailer in the country, has donated 260,000 backpacks stuffed with supplies through its annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway since 2013.

Any leftover backpacks and supplies will be donated to local schools.

In 2014, the National Retail Foundation predicted the average person with children in kindergarten through 12thgrade would spend $101.18 on school supplies, including notebooks, pencils and backpacks, compared to $90.49 in 2013.
