SOUTH FORSYTH — Renovation work has forced the temporary closure of a busy Forsyth County government building.

The Sharon Springs Tax Office, located at Sharon Springs Park, closed on Saturday and will reopen in six to eight weeks after renovations are completed, according to county officials.

The renovations, which are being handled by Cumming Development Construction, will cost about $171,164.

The makeover will be the first for the office since it opened in 1999. Plans call for a larger waiting area, including extra seating, and a redesign to the customer service counter.

During a recent work session, the county commission approved the project on a time-sensitive basis. At that time, there also was talk of installing a drive-thru window, but it appears there is not enough land at this time.

To avoid lines at the county’s main tax office on Tribble Gap Road, officials are encouraging residents to remit payments through the mail or online.

The main office, however, will be open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to officials, non-peak hours are 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

An official reopening date for the Sharon Springs office will be announced in a couple of weeks.
