Local music school and retailer Music Authority has reached a record number of summer campers for its Rock Camp 2016.

The camp has experienced sizeable growth from its beginning in 2007, when Rock Camp had only nine campers for the summer. Over three weeks this summer, almost 100 campers will attend the program.

“The secret of a successful camp is to have a staff of instructors who truly care about the well-being of each and every camper,” Camp Administrator Melissa Loggins said. “Our purpose is to give every child an opportunity to be successful, to feel like a rock star at the end of camp.”

Rock Camp offers youth ages 10-18 the experience of being a band member for a week. The campers also have the opportunity to perform in a concert at the end of the week at a professional venue.

The camp focuses on teaching team building, music history, band promotion, the meaning and development of a band image and music practice and performing.

The concert songs for campers are chosen based on the ability of the students. Since the songs are picked with the camper’s level of expertise in mind, each song is personally tailored to the campers, allowing every student from the beginner to the seasoned veteran to be challenged.

“Sometimes, it takes weeks of research before camp starts to make sure each song is exactly right for each camper,” Loggins said.

Rock Camp pushes students to support, encourage and help each other throughout the week, creating an environment that feels safe for all students. Students are able to step out of their comfort zones, and even the shyest campers are able to perform onstage as a result of the support system of their fellow students and the Music Authority family, Loggins said.

This year, Music Authority will offer Rock Camp Jr., a new program that is tailored to younger musicians. Rock Camp Jr. will feature shortened camp days and a less intense rock concert on the Friday night. The camp will be open to students ages 5-10 and will run from June 27-July 1 at Music Authority.

Rock Camp for older campers will be held June 6-10 and July 11-15 at Music Authority. The camp weeks will both culminate in concerts held at The Warehouse at 3095 Post Road in Cumming. The concerts will take place at 7 p.m. and will be open to the public.

Registration for Rock Camp and Rock Camp Jr. is open until the first day of each camp. To register, stop by Music Authority at 123 Merchants Square in Cumming or visit musicauthorityinc.com.
