Starting next month, visitors will have a new way to climb Sawnee Mountain.

Starting in April, a climbing tower is planned to open at the Sawnee Mountain Preserve for top-rope climbing, lead climbing and rappelling. The tower be able to have up to 10 climbers and two rappel participants at time and will be open to caps, group programs, birthday parties and individual passes.

“We are very excited to offer this amenity to Forsyth County residents,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor in a news release. “This new climbing tower adds more fun and adventure to an already robust assortment of activities available at Sawnee Mountain Preserve, and we can’t wait to hear what people think.”

The tower has 2,208 square feet of climbing space and routes range from 32 to 38 feet.

The climbing tower was possible due to a $60,000 donation from the Sawnee Mountain Foundation. The final cost, including construction and staff training, was $59,998.

On Saturdays in August, the tower will start host belay clinics and climbing programs.

The tower was built by Challenge Design Innovation of Pineola, N.C.
