A Cleveland man was arrested Wednesday night after he reportedly threatened a clerk with a knife at a convenience store in north Forsyth.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has charged John Carey Carter, 26, of Trade Winds Road with armed robbery.

Carter is being held without bond at the Forsyth County Detention Center, a jail spokeswoman said.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. at the Country Cupboard Shell station at 2775 Antioch Road, off Exit 16 on Ga. 400.
Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Huggins said the clerk, whose name has not been released, told the deputy that Carter had threatened her with a knife and demanded she give him all of her money.

Before she could do so, he wandered over to the beverage aisle. During that time, a nearby deputy responded to her 911 hang-up call.

“She pointed out the man in the store who was at the beer cooler,” Huggins said. “As he approached the counter to pay for the beer our deputy took Mr. Carter into custody.

He said the suspect was handcuffed and, after a brief struggle, placed in the patrol car.

Huggins said no one was injured in the incident and that Carter appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“An open knife was found in his pocket when he was searched,” Huggins said.
