DAWSONVILLE — Two teenagers from Forsyth County were arrested Sunday morning in connection with what authorities described as a case of illegal hunting.

According to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Ryan Bagley Coleman and Zachary Alex Coleman, both 17, also face theft by taking charges.

In addition, each was charged with hunting without a license and hunting on another’s land, misdemeanors.

Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Wooten said the teens removed a deer stand and a trail camera from private property, where they didn’t have the owner’s permission to hunt, off Jewel Slaton Road near the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

The state Department of Natural Resources filed the charges, which also include hunting turkey with illegal ammunition or weapon for Austin Coleman and hunting with an unplugged shotgun for Zachary Coleman.

“One of them was using a rifle that was not legal for turkey hunting and the other was using an unplugged shotgun, which basically means the shotgun would hold more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined,” Wooten said.

“One of the guns they were using was a tactical-type gun that could shoot a lot of rounds.”

Both were released from the Dawson County Detention Center after posting $3,500 bonds, according to jail records.

Turkey hunting season in Georgia began Saturday and runs through May 15.
