The state high school football playoffs get under way tonight, with one Forsyth County team looking to extend its stay.
No. 8-ranked West Forsyth, the Region 6-AAAAAA champion, welcomes Collins Hill at 7:30 tonight.
Last season the Wolverines (9-1, 6-1) became the first team in Forsyth County history to win a playoff game in Class AAAAA, which was at the time the state’s largest classification.
Playing in the newly created Class AAAAAA this year, West has a chance to again make history.
The team standing between the top-seeded Wolverines and that goal is Collins Hill (6-4, 5-3), the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AAAAAA in Gwinnett County. It’s the first meeting between the two teams at the varsity level.
Collins Hill has missed the state playoffs just three times since 1999 and appeared in the Class AAAAA semifinals as recently as 2010.
"We’ve got to be ready,” said West head coach Frank Hepler. “They’re going to come in here with great athletes and give us a great game."
