A Forsyth County program that encourages good health, friendship and self-esteem in young girls is looking for volunteer coaches at local schools.

Girls on the Run is a national learning program for girls in third through fifth grades. Its goal is for participants to finish a noncompetitive 5K run, but along the way it teaches health, friendship, positive body image and self-esteem.

The season begins Feb. 9. Coaches and volunteers are needed on Mondays and Wednesdays at Chestatee Elementary, and Tuesday and Thursday at Shiloh Point and Daves Creek elementary schools.

Classes run from 3 to 4:20 p.m. after school. Volunteers need not be runners to train students for the program's 5K run.
Classes have 12 to 15 students and run through April 26.
