Notice the flags this weekend. They’ll be visible everywhere you go — fluttering, colorful reminders of the Memorial Day holiday and its purpose.

This weekend has become the unofficial launch of the annual summer season, replete with cookouts, trips to the lake and relaxing leisure activities.

But the meaning of Memorial Day is stitched into the fabric of those flags.

This is the time set aside for us to remember those who gave their lives for their nation, the men and women of the armed forces who sacrificed all they had to give for the ideals and principles symbolized by those waving flags.

Remember them this weekend. Remember the price they paid, the grieving families they left behind, the nobility of lives lost in service to country and fellow man.

The flags are our reminder that the freedoms we enjoy in this nation come at a high price, and that those who have paid that price on our behalf deserve our eternal gratitude.
