FCN wins several awards at GPA contest

The Forsyth County News received eight awards, including three first place honors, in the Georgia Press Association's 2008 Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were announced during a banquet at the recent Georgia Press Association convention in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Photographer Jim Dean won two first place awards, one each for sports feature and spot news. Other first place honors went to Associate Editor Ben Holcombe for hard news writing.
John Hall, publisher of the newspaper, said he was proud of the newsroom's overall efforts and results.
"There is a lot of pride of work within the newsroom team under the leadership of our editor, Kevin Atwill," Hall said. "This talented group of journalists was recognized with awards from many news and photography categories in this year's contest."
The Forsyth County News' won five other awards in the contest, including:
* Second place for headline writing
* Second place for education coverage by Lara Moore
* Second place for religion coverage by Jennifer Sami
* Third place of local news coverage
* Third place for business coverage by Jennifer Sami
The Georgia Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest is an annual competition to recognize the best print journalism in Georgia.
In most categories, daily and weekly papers were judged in eight classes based on size. In some categories, all weekly newspapers were judged together in one class and all daily newspapers were judged in a second class.
