Local authorities say that Arthur Durand Handley Jr., a 42-year-old former police officer arrested last week for possessing child pornography, has been found dead in his home.

Handley, out on bond for six charges of sexual exploitation, was taken to Northside Hospital Forsyth at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday night after he was found by his wife who called 911, said Cpl. Doug Rainwater, spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Rainwater said that an autopsy to determine the cause of death is still underway, but that there were no signs of foul play.

Handley was arrested at 9 a.m. April 23 at his residence in north Forsyth after more than two weeks of investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

According to Rainwater, investigators found five child pornography images or videos that had been allegedly downloaded or saved to computers belonging to Handley.

He was charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of children for the distribution of child pornography, and one count of sexual exploitation of children for the possession of child pornography.

Handley was released from the Forsyth County jail on April 24 after he made a bond of more than $66,000.

According to documents obtained by FCN, Handley worked as a law enforcement officer in Albany, Smyrna and Alpharetta. More recently, he worked as a business development advisor for CopBLUE.com, an online publication for police officers.

Rainwater said that the investigation into Handley’s alleged crimes has been closed.
