DAWSON COUNTY — A special event license for a seasonal ice skating rink to be set up in the parking lot of the North Georgia Premium Outlets was approved by the Dawson County Board of Commissioners last week.

The rink, which will occupy a corner of the parking lot near the intersection of Dawson Forest Road and Ga. 400, is set to operate from Nov. 17 to Jan. 5.

Hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

The rink will be approximately 3,200 square feet with a maximum occupancy of 105 skaters.

The rink is one local man’s vision- Lloyd Freeman, who owns the business Mountain Ice Inc., is renting the rink.

Freeman said the rink, though outdoors, will be covered by a tent. There will be free popcorn and water will be sold, with proceeds going to the Dawson Community Food Bank.

Early bird tickets are on sale now for $10, and more information on tickets can be found at https://www.facebook.com/theicerinkatnorthgeorgia.

Ticket prices after Thanksgiving will be between $14 and $18 depending on the day and time, Freeman said.

There will also be opportunities for groups to rent out the rink for parties and private events when the mall closes at 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.

“We wanted to start a yearly tradition, hopefully one year of many for local people to come out and enjoy, as well as those visiting to shop,” Freeman said.”It should be an interesting first year. Next year we will know what to expect and have a schedule and concessions.”

Having lived in Dawson County for 15 years, Freeman said he has been looking into renting a skating rink for a long time.

“The time is right and we’re really looking forward to it,” Freeman said.
