More than 50 people had to be rescued Sunday night from an island on Lake Lanier after a large boat got stuck, authorities said.

According to Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Kevin Wallace, the department and the state Department of Natural Resources sent boats to Three Sisters Island to shuttle people back to nearby Holiday Marina after receiving a distress call.

The people had arrived on the same boat and beached on the island, Wallace said, but it was unknown who owned the vessel.

“They ran it up too far and the boat got hung up,” he said. “They weren’t technically stranded, but they were.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

With the busy Memorial Day weekend on the lake just days away, Wallace reminded boaters to be aware when anchoring.

“Be careful what you drive your boat up on,” he said. “With the lake being at low levels, it’s very easy for them to get hung up.”
