CUMMING — Superheroes will take over the Cumming Fairgrounds on Saturday with one goal — to battle cancer.

The American Cancer Society is holding its annual Relay for Life from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and attendees can expect to see people and things decked out in superhero gear for this year’s theme. They will include a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle transformed into a purple Relay For Life-mobile.

“It’s representing cancer never stops, so neither do we,” said Megan Edel, a cancer survivor and volunteer entertainment chair.

The event — the worldwide movement is the “world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer” — is all about “raising awareness about cancer research and getting people out here to remember loved ones that have survived cancer and that have lost their battle,” Edel said.

A ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. before a survivor and caregiver lap around the track at 7 p.m.

“With our theme being superheroes this year, we have selected our local hometown heroes — police, fire department, EMS, military and doctors to proudly take their lap at 7:15 p.m.,” said Brooke VanBuskirk, senior community manager for the local Relay event.

“At 8:30 p.m., we will light the luminaria bags around the track that honor and memorialize those touched by cancer.

“For those survivors seeing their name on a bag, they can celebrate that they have made it through their cancer journey. And for those caregivers looking at the luminaria bag with the name of their loved on who is no longer here, it’s extremely emotional.”

There will be plenty to see and do throughout the day, too.

“Our 53 local Relay for Life teams have been holding yard sales, jewelry parties, bake sales, church brunches and even hot dog sales … the majority of these teams will set up booths at the Cumming Fairgrounds, each one having raffles, games and selling food, and all of the money goes back to the American Cancer Society,” said Mysti Thacker, volunteer event lead.

There will also be bounce houses, Touch a Truck, games, food and live entertainment, including student performances from each Forsyth County high school.

A lip sync battle will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The event will be the debut of a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle wrapped in purple for Relay for Life, much like NASCAR cars are covered in logos.

The vehicle design, which will be used throughout the year in regular patrol duties, was 100 percent donated.

“[Relay] unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight once and for all,” VanBuskirk said.

“With the support of thousands of volunteers … The American Cancer Society is helping save more than 500 lives a day.”
