A new roundabout is planned near a busy Forsyth County park.
At a work session on Tuesday, Forsyth County Commissioners approved by a 4-0 vote, with District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills absent, to send a letter in support of a roundabout at the intersection of State Barn and Keith Bridge roads (Hwy. 306) requested by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Engineering Director John Cunard said GDOT was requiring a developer to build the roundabout.
“My understanding is GDOT’s encroachment permit for developers is contingent on them receiving this letter,” Cunard said. “What the letter does, it basically obligates the county to be responsible for the electricity charges for the street lighting that is required … and if some point in the future GDOT and the county were to approve landscaping, it would make the county responsible for maintenance of that landscaping.”
Cunard said the developer will pay for those electric charges and an HOA for the development will be in charge of maintenance.
Commissioners voiced some concerns that the design of the roundabout could cause issues if the roadway was widened. The roundabout will go near the upcoming The Orchards at Central Park development, which will feature 160 active adult units, and will be east of the entrance to Central Park.
