CUMMING -- Athletes and Central Park-goers will soon have a new synthetic turf field.
During a meeting on Tuesday, the Forsyth County commission voted 5-0 to award the bid for the new field for Central Park to Sprinturf of Atlanta for $790,125.
The synthetic turd field will occupy the area of the soccer fields beside the existing synthetic turf football field and will measure 360 feet by 380 feet.
Recently, parks and county officials have favored synthetic turf fields, as natural grass does not typically have time to recover from the heavy use on county fields.
Work on the field is expected to begin in July and be completed by the end of August.
“It’s a multi-purpose area, it isn’t just a soccer area, so we’re putting synthetic turf down. We can paint the lines on it as we need it for different fields. That makes it more multi-purpose,” Parks Director Jim Pryor said.
Pryor said the project came in cheaper than anticipated, though it is higher than some previous synthetic turf fields due to its size.
“We did budget $850,000 for this for the 2015 budget,” he said, “so we’re coming in under.”
