A 51-year-old Suwanee man died Wednesday afternoon when a large tree fell on his sport utility vehicle as strong storms swept across Forsyth County.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. on Brookwood Road, just off of McGinnis Ferry Road in south Forsyth.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Capt. Tim House said a passer-by reported that a pine tree had fallen on top of the 2008 GMC Yukon while it was traveling north along Brookwood.

Authorities identified the man as Kevin Neenan of Riverhaven Drive.

Authorities said marks on the road indicate Neenan may have seen the tree as it fell, but was unable to stop in time.

House noted that the wreck occurred as heavy rains and strong winds lashed the area.

Firefighters had to use chainsaws to remove the tree, which crushed the windshield and front seat area of the truck.

A tree also fell across a north Forsyth road during the storm, but no injuries were reported as a result.
