Law enforcement responders from three counties, including Forsyth County, assisted in pulling a man’s body from Lake Lanier on Saturday, June 2.

The initial call came at 4:05 p.m. at Lanier Park off Buford Dam Road at the southern end of the lake.

Gwinnett County firefighter driver engineer Justin Wilson said authorities “were able to locate the victim underwater after about an hour of search.” Wilson said the man was dead when recovered by first responders.

Officers and rangers from Hall County Fire Services, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Natural Resources assisted in the search.

Wilson said the man was found in about 10 feet of water.

“There was a group of people swimming in the water, and they swam out to a buoy and back. On the way back, he ended up going under and was in distress,” he said.

Bystanders attempted to rescue the man, but were unsuccessful.

Wilson said details about the man’s ID would come from DNR or the medical examiner’s office.
