Report: Authorities ID Gainesville man who died in Myrtle Beach, S.C., swimming incident
Emergency

A 35-year-old Gainesville man died Sunday morning during a swimming incident at Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to a Facebook post from the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

The man, who wasn’t identified in the post, was about knee deep in the ocean with a young relative “when a wave crashed over him,” police said.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported that Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard identified the Gainesville man as Raymundo Garcia.

A lifeguard “who had arrived at the beach early to start his shift and a family member rescued the male from the ocean,” the post states.

Meanwhile, police dispatch received a report of a distressed swimmer at 7:58 a.m.

The lifeguard, an off-duty emergency medical technician, and a police officer performed CPR on the man. An emergency crew took the man to the hospital, where he died, police said.

“We have nothing else to release at this time,” Myrtle Beach Police Lt. Joey Crosby said.
