An Atlanta woman was hospitalized Wednesday morning after she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Veterans Memorial Boulevard in downtown Cumming.

Cumming Police Detective John Coffman said the 26-year-old was hit in the crosswalk along West Maple Street, heading toward the Forsyth County Courthouse.

He said she was taken to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, where she was later listed in stable condition.

Coffman said police cited Donald E. Jones, 72, of Franklin Goldmine Road, for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

He explained that Jones was turning left onto Veterans Memorial from West Maple in his Chevrolet 1500 pickup when the collision occurred.

Coffman said Jones did not run a red light and the incident appeared to be an accident.

“When the light is green on [West Maple], the pedestrian light going across Veterans may be lit, so people can walk across,” said Coffman, adding that vehicles may at the same time turn left or go straight.

The Forsyth County Fire Department blocked the busy intersection while authorities tended to the woman.

Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said she suffered traumatic injuries to her lower extremities.
