Letter to the editor
Democrat voters have their reasons

Forsyth County News
If Mr. Underwood (letters to editor, Aug. 1) speaks for the majority of Republicans in Forsyth County — and I assume he does since he is the local party chairman — then the rest of us, as patriotic Americans and true lovers of freedom, have reason to be afraid — very, very afraid.

Since he was so charitable in explaining why Republicans vote the way they do, let me return the favor and explain why I believe Democrats — there were over 15,000 of us in the county who voted in the last presidential election, so I don’t feel so lonely — vote the way we do.

We vote Democrat because we accept the fact that freedom does not come without a price and are willing to pay our fair share.

We vote Democrat because we are small business owners and professionals who have to make the hard decisions about letting good employees go or cutting their benefits because someone in Washington insists on granting tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans at our expense.

We vote Democrat because we worked hard to earn what we have and don’t appreciate others trying to make us feel guilty for believing that we are indeed our brothers’ keepers.

We vote Democrat because we believe that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world and that one of the reasons is that we are free to worship as we choose without government telling us who and what to believe.

We vote Democrat because we believe that even with all its flaws, our system of government is still the best there is and that the two-party system has served us well.

We vote Democrat because we believe that, just as government has no right to support one religion over another, it also has no right to tell our wives, our daughters, our mothers or our sisters what they can and cannot do with their own bodies.

We vote Democrat because we welcome all who choose to live in our county, as long as they are law abiding citizens — even if they don’t look, think and act just like we do.

We vote Democrat because we are suspect of people who tell us to listen only to preachers from one denomination or faith.

We vote Democrat because we believe you can be liberal or conservative — Democrat or Republican — and still be sane and a “Great American.”

We vote Democrat because we do not believe it is our job to “convert” you. It is our job to live and work next to you each day in peace — in spite of our differences.
