We would like to thank the Honorable Russell McClelland, sponsoring judge for the first Cumming (Region 17) Regional Mock Trial Competition, and other members of the planning committee, including regional co-coordinators Clay White and Nathan Gaffney, James Wilson, Dawn Childress, Erin O’Mara, the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia, and members of the Cumming-Forsyth Bar Association for bringing a regional Mock Trial Competition to Forsyth County.
Due to their efforts, Forsyth County students had the opportunity, for the first time in the 23-year history of the Georgia High School Mock Trial Program, to participate in a competition in their own community.
Mock Trial has been a tradition in Forsyth County since the Georgia High School Program began. In its early years, students were coached by many local attorneys, including Judge McClelland, Judge Bagley, and Judge Dickinson. Many practicing attorneys, such as Ryan Klee, Kevin Tallant, Lauren Terry, Nick Szokoly, and Ryan Feeney, obtained their initial experience in law by participating in Mock Trial.
Judge Stan Gault was an ardent supporter of Mock Trial, working with the Forsyth County teams who participated for a number of years. He dreamed of the day when students would have their own region in Forsyth County. In tribute to him, a trophy was presented in his name to the winning team, West Forsyth High School. We are grateful for the efforts of all of these leaders in our community.
We would also like to thank the governments of Forsyth County and the city of Cumming, the Forsyth County Board of Education, the Forsyth County Rotary Clubs, Paula Gault, and local businesses, including Publix, Chick-fil-A, and Lanierland Florist for their support.
