Summer break is almost here. As parents and students in Forsyth County get ready for the much deserved time off from school, the task of selecting summer activities may seem daunting.
Many parents seek low cost, high excitement activities that still offer an educational element for their children. Luckily, the Forsyth County 4-H Club has many exciting options for current fourth- to sixth-graders to choose from that are all $10-$40.
Spaces for all of these summer day camps are filled on a first-come first-served basis, so sign up quickly. Sign-up deadlines are two weeks before each event, but we encourage your child to register up front for all events they would like to participate in so that they reserve their space.
We are kicking off the summer on May 30 with a day of strawberry picking at Warbington Farms. This fun day camp includes picking a pint of strawberries, learning how they grow, visiting the petting zoo and going on a hay ride. The cost is $15.
If you are looking to meet some large animals, Farm Day is for you. On June 12 we will be visiting Flying P-Ranch in the north part of Forsyth County. It will be a day of learning about horses and how to care for them, playing ranch games, seeing riding demonstrations, and hands on time with the horses, dogs and chickens. The cost for this event is $20.
There are two Animal Shelter Days on June 20 and July 11. Keeping with the 4-H Motto “To Make the Best Better” you can join us in volunteering at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Both days will offer the chance to make a difference by assisting staff with providing care for cats and dogs. We will provide lunch for all of our 4-H volunteers and the cost is $10.
If you want to try your hand at prospecting and enjoy the great outdoors all in one day, then 4-H Dahlonega Day is for you. On June 27 we are taking a bus up to Dahlonega. This exciting day includes gemstone panning in the historic gold rush town, and a tubing trip down the Chestatee River. The cost is $20.
On July 18, 4-H’ers are invited to tour the Atlanta History Center at a discounted cost. Admission includes access to tour the farm, museums, newly restored cyclorama, and even the Swan House that was featured in the Hunger Games. You will spend the whole day exploring the history center and all of the exhibits for the low cost of $10.
Last but not least, on July 25, Forsyth County 4-H will be having a day on the mountain. At Sawnee Mountain Day we will go tree climbing using special equipment provided by Sawnee Mountain Preserve, and we will go on an environmental nature hike. The cost is $40.
