Wolverine squads out at 7-AAA tourney

West Forsyth’s basketball teams both fell one win short of their first trip to the  state playoffs.

Playing in the second round of the Region 7-AAA Tournament, the Lady Wolverines suffered a 51-48 loss to top-seeded Gilmer on Wednesday at the Lady Bobcats’ home floor in Ellijay.

West’s boys were denied a berth in the Class AAA state playoffs in a 56-43 loss to West Hall on Thursday at North Hall High School in Gainesville.

Lance Baker led West Forsyth with 12 points and John Benedict added 11. Kris Drees was also in double-figures with 10 for the Wolverines.

Spartans senior Rodney Gibson snapped his team out of a second half lull, muscling inside for a dunk at the 3:05 mark in the third quarter to give West Hall a 31-28 lead. From there, the Spartans ended the quarter on a 12-2 run.

Jarquise Young and Kavon Williams added to the Spartans’ run by each hitting a three-pointer before the end of the third period.

Gibson led West Hall with a game-high 16 points. Spartans sophomore Shunquez Stephens finished with 13. Young and Williams each scored 10 for West Hall.

Stephens helped preserve West Hall’s victory in the fourth quarter with solid play inside and on the perimeter. He hit four consecutive free throws midway through the fourth quarter giving the Spartans their biggest lead of the game at 50-35.

West Forsyth’s season is now complete.
