Forsyth Central’s gymnastics team started the 2014 season on the right foot last Saturday, winning the annual Forsyth County Gymnastics Meet at Dobbs Creek with 106.65 total points.
Lambert, the reigning state champion, was the favorite heading into the meet, but finished second behind the Lady Bulldogs with 102.9 points. South Forsyth (91.85) placed third, and West Forsyth (90.5) placed fourth.
Central finished first in each individual event, all won by underclassmen. Freshman Emily Flint earned top honors in the Vault (9.1) and the All-Around (35.25); freshman MacKenzie Miller won the Beam (9.45); and sophomore Maecie Winter won the Bars (9.3) and Floor Routine (9.2).
Lambert had three second place finishes (Katie Stuart on the Bars and Floor, and Delany Givens on the Beam), but Central’s dominance was too much to overcome.
“Our girls have been working so hard for this,” said Central coach Angie Kudlas. “This is one of the strongest teams we have had in years. The girls came into the meet focused, prepared and determined.
“To beat a team like Lambert, who has so many talented girls and accomplishments, was an awesome way to start the season. We look forward to what the rest of the season holds.”
