Lambert’s search for a new baseball coach is finally over.
The Longhorns have hired Brookwood head coach Rick Howard, according to Lambert athletic director Drew Ferrer. Howard will remain at Brookwood through the end of the 2015 season and take over at Lambert for the 2015-16 school year, while Ferrer will coach the defending Class AAAAAA state champions on an interim basis this spring.
Howard was an assistant coach at the Snellville school from 1995-2004 before taking over for Doug Jones prior to the 2005 season. The Broncos have qualified for the state playoffs in each of Howard’s nine seasons, including a state runner-up finish in 2012 and a state championship and No. 3 national ranking in 2008.
Lucas Sims, the Atlanta Braves’ first-round pick in 2012, pitched at Brookwood under Howard’s guidance.
After Jamie Corr accepted the head coaching job at Florida Southwestern State, his alma mater, on June 30, Lambert looked briefly for candidates. Given the timing—just six weeks before school started—school principal Gary Davison turned to Ferrer, a former South baseball assistant under Corr, for one season.
The Longhorns finished 36-2 last season and beat Milton in a dramatic three-game series to win the Class AAAAAA championship.
