Cullowhee, N.C. – Former Forsyth Central standout Danny Bermudez was part of a trio of Western Carolina baseball players on the Southern Conference’s preseason all-league squad unveiled Thursday as selected by its nine coaches.
Paced by the three first team selections, Western Carolina was the unanimous SoCon favorite in 2015, garnering the preseason top spot in tabulations from the coaches and voting media. It is the second-straight season that Western Carolina – a two-time, defending league regular season champion – has been picked atop the preseason ledger.
Bermudez, who will wear the prestigious Leggett No. 7 Legacy jersey in 2015, earned the first all-conference recognition of any kind of his career. Last spring, the catcher batted a career-best .305 with 32 hits, six going for extra bases including his first collegiate home run at Georgia Southern. Bermudez reached base safely in 20-straight games last year, the second-longest streak of his WCU career.
WCU’s three, first-team selections were each voted team captains for the Purple & Gold entering the 2015 season, joined by senior closer Tyler Powell, who is coming off a 13-save season in 2014. Bermudez is just the second underclassman in recent years to be voted by his peers to the honor.
