The Longhorns are going to the state tournament for the first time in program history.
The Lambert boys golf team won the Class 6A State Sectionals tournament over 14 other schools with a score of 304, topping second-place finisher Norcross by three strokes.
Harry Lambert led the team with a score of 73, while teammates Campbell Fisher, Alex Graveno and Tommy Hoemeke, all three of whom carded a 77, rounded out the group.
“I had total confidence they could get the job done,” Lambert head coach Brian Jakaitis said. “We shot the second lowest [score] in all the region tournaments in the state …They believe in themselves.
“We’ve struggled in years [past] to close out tournaments. We’d start strong, but couldn’t close. This year, they’re finishing the drill.”
Jakaitis went on to note that, “Harry’s been our No. 1 golfer all season long and we’ve got six seniors, so I don’t see why we shouldn’t win [the state title].”
The Longhorns will vie for the state championship on Monday at Springhill Country Club in Tifton.
Pinecrest Academy’s Jess Hill qualified for the state competition in the Class A private school division. Hill shot a 75, which landed him in a three-way tie for first.
