Gymnastics: Lambert wins county title behind Greenlow's huge performance

Brianna Greenlow spent last year’s Forsyth County Gymnastics Championship in a wheelchair.

On Saturday, she was back on her feet, helping Lambert reclaim superiority in the county. Greenlow put on the best individual performance among the four teams gathered at BIO Gymnastics, winning the all-around title and leading the Longhorns to a comfortable team title win.

Greenlow, a sophomore with a number of Division I gymnastics programs courting her, was laid up in 2016 with two broken ankles, which she sustained two weeks before the county meet, when Lambert finished second, behind Forsyth Central.

Saturday, then, was Greenlow's emphatic introduction to the meet, which is in its fifth year of being contested. Greenlow won the vault, balance beam and floor routine, and while West’s Sienna Schreiber proved to be a strong competitor for Greenlow, tallying the highest single score of the day with a 9.9 on the uneven bars, Greenlow’s overall total of 38.55 outpaced Schreiber’s 37.95.

“It was good to go up and hit beam,” Greenlow said, referring to her 9.6 in that event. “That’s typically my better event, but sometimes nerves can get to you and stuff. So I try and stay in my zone before I compete and just get up there and know that I can do the same thing when I compete that I (can) do in practice.”

Lambert wasn’t completely injury-free on Saturday: During the Longhorns’ rotation on the beam, senior Bethany Chung hurt her ankle on her dismount and had to sit out the floor routine. Freshman Frances Benefield stepped in capably in that event, though, recording a 9.1 to keep Lambert on pace for the team title, which it won with a score of 111.75.

“At that point, it wasn’t really about the team,” Greenlow said. “It was more about (Bethany’s) safety. We weren’t worried about winning: We were worried that she was okay, and once we knew that she was okay and icing, that’s when Frances stepped up and really became a team player.

This season is Kara Dicesare’s first as Lambert’s head coach, and she saw the Longhorns put up their highest team score of the season in their most important meet to date. Lambert now aims for a high finish at state prelims in April, where they’ll look to break Buford’s streak of three straight state titles.

The strong showing on Saturday, which was the first meet of the year when the Longhorns had all of their top athletes competing together, is a good omen for prelims and, potentially, the state finals.

“I said, ‘Our whole family’s here,’” Dicesare said. “It was fun to have everybody here together to celebrate.”
