For three years, 25 boys have watched their local high school lacrosse team, the Lambert Longhorns, compete for the Georgia High School Association championship title. Last month, they got to experience their own state championship win.
The Lambert Longhorn Jr. Select lacrosse team defeated the Pope Greyhounds Jr. Select team to win the U13 Mayla Cup State Championship. There are 24 teams that compete in the Jr. Select boys league of the Metro Atlanta Youth Lacrosse Association (MAYLA). The Longhorns, coached by Todd Greenhalgh, Simon Hakim, Paul Zeman and Kevin Knaus, finished their season with a 19-1 record.
The Lambert Longhorn Junior and Senior Select teams feed into the Lambert High School lacrosse program.
"We have seen a tremendous increase in participation throughout our entire youth program," states Rich Wehman, Director of Lambert Longhorns Lacrosse. "This last spring, we had nine U13 teams in the recreational league. By design, the Atlanta Rage summer teams are coached by the same young men who won those high school state championships in the past. It provides for a very unique dynamic where we connect our past teams to our future teams. They all have ownership in the same program."
Most of the team has continued playing together for the Atlanta Rage, a summer travel team, and recently took home the first place trophy at the LB3 Summer Jam tournament in Kennesaw. They will finish out their summer season in Annapolis, Md., and Peachtree City.
