Lambert started region play 12-0 before falling, 2-1, to South on Sept. 23. The Lady Longhorns did not clinch Region 6-AAAAAA with their Oct. 7 win over Northview as previously thought. Instead, Lambert needed a win at North Forsyth in the final game of region play to wrap up a second consecutive title.

Seniors Macy Stovall and Savannah Huffstetler took care of that by each hitting home runs and combining to drive in all seven runs in a 7-1 win over the Lady Raiders last Friday. Good thing Lady Longhorns coach Brooks Youngblood planned to play his usual starters against North.

Lambert finished 17-1 in Region 6, outscoring opponents 162-24 in those 18 games. Some memorable moments from this season:

— A 9-8 road win over West Forsyth on Aug. 19, in which the Lady Longhorns led, 9-2, going in to the bottom of the seventh. West plated six runs, but Marissa Guimbarda — who Youngblood stuck with despite trouble — stranded the tying run on second base. Guimbarda hit a two-run home run in the sixth that, at the time, added insult to injury, but it would prove to be a crucial cushion.

— Lambert tagged South pitcher Katherine Huey for two runs in the first and four runs in the third and Guimbarda worked five shutout innings as the Lady Longhorns run-ruled the Lady War Eagles at home, 8-0, on Aug. 21. It was South’s largest margin of defeat all season.

— The visiting Lady Longhorns trailed Northview, 3-2, with just three outs left on Sept. 5, but Lambert slugged back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh to take the lead and escape with a 4-3 win.

— Guimbarda threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout and Savannah Huffstetler homered in a 2-0 home win over North Forsyth on Sept. 9.

— Huffstetler hit a leadoff home run and Lambert took down Northview, 6-3, on Oct. 7, with Guimbarda pitching only the seventh inning. Kassidy Krupit and Audrey Merrill held the Lady Titans in check and Guimbarda's two-run double off the fence in right field gave the Lady Longhorns the lead for good as Lambert moved one win away from the Region 6 championship.
