Cross country: Forsyth Central duo finish 1-2 in Jekyll Island

BRUNSWICK – Forsyth Central’s Calan Gizelbach and Eli Smith had a top-2 sweep at the Jekyll Island Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

Gizelbach won the event in 16 minutes 3 seconds, while Smith was close behind in 16:25 to finish runner-up. The duo’s strong pairing helped the Bulldogs place second out of 24 teams to Walton.

Central also got strong runs from Lachlan Yarbrough (24th, 17:57), Roy Harkins (29th, 18:08) and Cooper Meitz (32nd (18:11).

Central’s girls also placed second in the team standings in a closer finish with Walton. The Bulldogs were led by Caitlyn Sylvestre (11th, 22:00), Meredith Edwards (13th, 22:26), Anna Neville (15th, 22:30), Riley Byers (18th, 22:37) and Keeley Whitmer (22nd, 22:43).

Lambert boys impress at Clara Bowl

ROME – Tyler Fox and Lee Keil had top-10 finishes as the Longhorns placed fourth out of 40 teams at the Berry College Clara Bowl Invitational on Saturday.

Fox finished third in 16 minutes 10 seconds, while Keil finished 10th in 16:39.

Lambert also got strong performances from Michael Tardella (46th, 17:24), Adam Nicholson (62nd, 17:41) and Cooper Bocko (65th, 17:42) to finish behind St. Pius, Mill Creek and Blessed Trinity.

Josh Schunk finished 16th in 16:53 to lead North Forsyth to 16th in the team standings. Other top runners for the Raiders were Caleb Hall (43rd, 17:21), Anthony Verdirame (67th, 17:43), Wyatt Campbell (134th, 18:36) and Elias Koehler (184th, 19:09).

Lambert’s girls, meanwhile, came in ninth out of 33 teams, led by Caroline Gaharan’s 12th-place finish in 19:49. The Longhorns also got strong runs from Brianna O’Neal (42nd, 20:56), Emily Chapman (45th, 21:15), Reilly Stevens (60th, 21:32) and Julia Leveille (72nd, 21:57).

North’s girls placed 32nd in the team standings and were led by Stephanie Metzger.
