Horizon Christian Academy will not field a varsity football team for the 2012 season due to a lack of participation, athletic director Charles Wiggins said.
Wiggins, who was hired in February as the school’s head football coach and athletic director, said only five athletes came out for practice. The school currently plans to attempt to field a team in 2013.
"I’m hoping and praying that we’ll get kids who want to play [next year]," Wiggins said, "but right now is doesn’t look good."
Horizon, a private school in Cumming with an enrollment of about 80 students in grades 9-12, established its varsity football program in 2010 and competed the past two seasons in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama (ICSGA) association. The Warriors played their home games at Bennett Park.
Wiggins started Pinecrest Academy’s football program in 2004 and coached there through the 2011 season. He was set to be the Warriors’ third varsity football coach in three seasons.
