Last Chance goes well for Forsyth cross country teams

Saturday’s cross country race at Carrollton was the last chance in more ways than one for Forsyth runners – the last chance to practice on the state meet course before the real thing and the last tune-up before region meets this week.

There were a myriad of impressive of performances, led by South Forsyth boys winning the Class AAAAAA race and Savannah Carnahan winning the girls event.

Ryan Peppenhorst and Jake Howlin swept the top two spots in the boys race finishing in 17 minutes 1.06 seconds and 17:27.93, respectively. Other top runners for the War Eagles were Reed Vaughn (ninth, 17:45.55), Matt Patterson (15th, 17:52.27) and Trevor Kane (29th, 18:23.07). South’s depth helped the team finished first with 51 points, well ahead of Etowah (77).

Carnahan won the girls race in 19:42.88 to lead the Lady War Eagles to a fourth place finish with 97 points. Milicent Bergey finished fifth in 20:26, Savannah Ratcliff finished 28th in 21:52.19, Emma Maisel finished 30th in 21:52.93 and Olivia Turner was 32nd in 21:53.40.

Lambert impresses at Carrollton: The Longhorns had a strong day at Carrollton with both the boys and girls finishing third in their respective races.

The boys finished third thanks to a pair of top-10 finishes from Noah Schaich and Jonathan Schwind. The two finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in 17:35.21 and 17:37.51. Other top runners for the Longhorns were Hank Grogan (22nd, 18:09.69), Christopher Scharp (33rd, 18:24.31) and Thomas Schwind (35th, 18:24.31).

The Lady Longhorns had five top 30 finishes to finish ahead of rival South by nine points, led by freshman Mae McKenna’s seventh-place finish in 20:35.34. Katherine Aikins finished 13th in 21:20.34, Megan Gianini was 15th in 21:33.65, Jamie Angle finished 25th in 21:48.71 and Samantha Hardy came in 28th in 21:52.19.

North strong at Carrollton: The Raiders finished eighth in the Class AAAAAA boys race, led by freshman Saul Renteria’s 30th-place finish in 18:23.15.

Other top runners for North were Ben Cochran (40th, 18:37.22), Aaron Bohan (52nd, 18:50.87), Nick Jacobson (85th, 19:29.57) and Scott Henderson (85th, 19:29.57).

The North girls finished 12th overall led by Gigi Fulkerson, who came in 56th in 22:51.33. Julianne Oliver finished 78th in 23:41.91, Nina Carter finished 84th in 23:46.83, Brittany Smith finished 101st in 24:41.54 and Jessica Will was 103rd in 24:42.84.

Central earns top 10: The Bulldogs cracked the top 10 with a ninth place finish in the Class AAAAA race, led by sophomore Max Warner who finished 15th in 17:57.39.

Will Scott was 36th in 18:26.89, Matt Kraska was 90th in 19:16.44, Cole Gizelbach was 95th in 19:18.19 and Charlie Webb came in 105th in 19:29.83.

Bonnie McKinnon led the Central girls with a 40th-place finish in 22:38.50. Lydia Lindsey was 123rd in 25:55.24, Isabella Clapp came in 147th in 27:15.66, Lisa Ricassi was 148th in 27:17.14 and Sarah Fincher finished 154th in 27:39.07. The Lady Bulldogs finished 18th in the team standings.
