PREP ROUNDUP: South volleyball cruises in area opener

South Forsyth cruised to a 25-11, 25-10 victory against North Forsyth on Monday in the opening round of the Area 5-AAAAAA volleyball tournament at South.

The Lady War Eagles (45-10) advanced to the area quarterfinals to face Centennial at 5 tonight.

Taylor Svehla led South with 10 kills to go along with six digs. Hannah Shanley added eight kills. Tory Wright had nine digs while Rachel Croce had eight digs. Kelli McCravy had a team-high 22 assists.

West eliminated: The Lady Wolverines were swept and eliminated from the Area 5-AAAAAA tournament.

West lost to Johns Creek 25-16, 25-19 in the opening round before losing to Alpharetta 25-23, 22-25, 25-15 in the loser’s bracket.

Shelby Lance had a team-best 16 kills and six blocks for the Lady Wolverines. Jordan Leitch led the team with 22 assists and three aces. Savannah Butler had seven kills, Danielle Menningmann had a team-high 10 digs while Alyssa Robertson added nine digs.

North eliminated: The Lady Raiders lost two matches and were eliminated from the Area 5-AAAAAA tournament.

North lost to South 25-11, 25-10 in the opening round before losing to Lambert 25-22, 25-11 in the loser’s bracket.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lambert shines: The Longhorns boys and girls cross country teams finished eighth out of over 30 teams at the Wendy’s Invitational on Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, N.C.

Noah Schaich led Lambert boys with a 21st-place finish in 16 minutes 22 seconds. Hank Grogan finished 34th in 16:52, followed by Jonathan Schwind at 37th in 16:59, Byron Grogan at 106th in 18:06 and Christopher Sharp at 111th in 18:09.

Jamie Angle led the Lady Longhorns with a 32nd-place finish in 20:19. Mae McKenna finished 39th in 20:25, Madeline Gilleland at 44th in 20:30, Megan Gianini at 54th in 20:47 and Katherine Aiken at 92nd in 21:46.
