South tops North to open area volleyball slate
The South Forsyth volleyball team beat North Forsyth, 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13 on Tuesday night to open the Area 5-7A volleyball schedule.
The War Eagles, which twice lost to the Raiders in three sets last year, prevailed with help from a huge match by senior Molly Bergin, who had 20 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, as well as 16 digs. Nyah Pacely also had 22 assists for the War Eagles while playing just three sets. Mary Ellen Enright led North with 14 kills, and Kate Perryman and Halle Vercek had seven each. Perryman and Vercek also accounted for seven blocks apiece.
Forsyth Central also opened its area slate on Tuesday, losing in three sets to Milton. Denmark fell in two non-area matches on Tuesday, losing in two sets to St. Francis and Mount Pisgah at home.
Mize’s no-hitter keys North; West tops Central with early outburst
Hailey Mize threw a five-inning no-hitter for the North Forsyth softball team on Tuesday in the Raiders’ 9-0 win over Milton. Mize had six strikeouts and one walk in the effort.
Mallorie Black, Abby Martin and Anslee Anderson had two hits each for North, with Black chipping in a double and triple and accounting for four RBIs. Martin also had a home run.
West Forsyth scored three runs in the second and two in the third to take an early lead on Central and secure an eventual 7-4 win on Tuesday. It was the Wolverines’ first region win and the Bulldogs’ first region loss. Hannah Guthrie threw seven innings for the win for West, and Emily Kraft and Kelsey Schell had home runs for the Wolverines.
Denmark opened its region schedule with a win as well, topping West Hall 10-8. Tylor Gajdik had a complete-game victory for the Danes, and Morgan Kilmer and Jessie DeNardo each had three-hit games. DeNardo had two doubles and a home run.
