PREP ROUNDUP: West girls start region play with big win

The West Forsyth Lady Wolverines beat Johns Creek on the road, 59-34, on Tuesday in their first region game of the year.

Sophomore forward Jenna Staiti shined for West (6-0, 1-0 Region 6-AAAAAA) with 30 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks, helping the Lady Wolverines stay perfect in 2013. 

Junior guard Conner Parker had a strong game as well, scoring eight points and earning seven steals. Abby Quincy, a freshman guard, chipped in eight points.

North Forsyth 56, Chattahoochee 45: The Lady Raiders continued their strong start with a Region 6-AAAAAA win on the road.

Lochlain Corliss led North with 16 points and four steals, Caroline Bowns had 12 points and seven rebounds while Avery Scarbrough added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Raiders trailed 15-10 after the first quarter but out-scored the Lady Cougars 18-6 in the second quarter to take control.

North returns to action Friday against Johns Creek at home.

Forsyth Central 56, Cambridge 25: The Lady Bulldogs (2-2) took care of business against the Lady Bears (1-3) in a Region 7-AAAAA road game.  

Emma Kane led the Lady Raiders in points and rebounds with 23 and 10, respectively. Kayla Bennett had nine points and five boards, and Julie Richards contributed eight points in the victory.

“We played well against Cambridge, who we know is still a new and up and coming program,” said Central head coach Angela Hurt. “It is important for us to win the games we are supposed to, but at the same time we have to continue to focus on doing the little things better so we will be better prepared for the teams that are established.” 

Central scored the first 18 points of the game and ended the first half up 43-7, cruising to their second win.

They’ll return to action on Friday when they visit Sprayberry (1-1).

Alpharetta 47, Lambert 37: The Lady Longhorns to Lady Raiders for their first loss of the year.

Lambert (2-1, 0-1 Region 6-AAAAAA) was down by just four points after three quarters, but Alpharetta pulled away in the fourth, out-scoring the Lady Longhorns 16-8 in the final eight minutes of play.

Fellowship Christian 61, Pinecrest Academy 44: Pinecrest Academy remained winless on the season after a tough loss on the road.

Junior Maggie Herd scored 22 points for Pinecrest (0-6), making six of seven two-point attempts.

Senior captain Amanda Boyd added 16 points, five rebounds and six steals for Pinecrest, and junior Bailey Evans had 11 rebounds along with six points.


West Forsyth 70, Johns Creek 67: The Wolverines made clutch free throws down the stretch to open Region 6-AAAAAA play with a win on the road.

West (3-3, 1-0) made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Jimmy Staiti led the Wolverines with 17 points, Nick Staiti and Logan Miller scored 16 points apiece and John Conway added 13 points.

West returns to action Friday at home against Centennial.

Lambert 60, Alpharetta 47: The Longhorns earned an impressive win in their Region 6-AAAAAA opener on the road.

Tanner Hall led Lambert with 14 points. Joe Bates had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Trevor Shipes added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Devontae Cook led Alpharetta with 17 points.

The Longhorns return to action Friday at South Forsyth.

Chattahoochee 47, North Forsyth 45: Chad Bureau’s potential game-winning 3 was blocked and the Raiders lost a close game in their Region 6-AAAAAA opener on the road.

Bureau led the Raiders (0-6, 0-1) with 15 points, while Branson Marks and Rome Bailey had nine points apiece.

North returns to action Friday against Johns Creek at home.

Cambridge 64, Forsyth Central 42: The Bulldogs’ perfect start to the season ended in a tough Region 7-AAAAA loss on the road.

Central (3-1, 1-1) was led by Jeremiah Jones, who had 12 points. Eli Brown and Josiah Laws had 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Central returns to action Friday at Sprayberry.

Fellowship Christian 54, Pinecrest Academy 30: The Paladins remained winless on the season with a loss on the road.

Pinecrest (0-6) was led by Nick Palmer, who had 22 points.

The Paladins return to action Friday at Tallulah Falls.
