What to know: Centennial is another of Region 6-AAAAAA’s three teams breaking in first-year head coaches this season. The Knights hired Lenny Gregory to replace Jeff Carlberg, who went 9-21 in three seasons. Gregory was on the Grayson staff since 2008, most recently as defensive coordinator, during which time the Rams went 84-16 with a state championship in 2011. He’s also a familiar face for South – Gregory was a defensive line coach for the War Eagles in 2003 under then-head coach Norris Vaughn.
But South hasn’t been too kind to Centennial in recent seasons. The War Eagles hung 49 points on the Knights last season, and if South’s season-opener two weeks ago is any indication, they could do it again. The War Eagles dominated Gwinnett County’s Mountain View, 45-14. Most encouraging was the play of first-year starting quarterback Davis Shanley. The junior completed 14 of 22 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more touchdowns.
