Girls soccer: South Forsyth cruises past Lakeside-DeKalb in first round state playoff win

South Forsyth’s lights out defense and powerful offense dominated the pitch during a 15-3 regular season.

None of that changed in the War Eagles’ 4-0 win over Lakeside-DeKalb in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs Thursday at home.

South advances to face No. 1-seeded Hillgrove, a 10-0 winner over Colquitt County.

South’s four goals involved three players: Meagan Postell, Reagan Smith and Jenna Vollrath. All three scored goals. All three had assists to each other.

Vollrath assisted on Postell’s opening goal, then again on Smith’s goal to start the second half.

“She (Vollrath) has been a very dominating force this season,” South head coach Tom Braun said. “She used her size to her advantage.”

Postell finished with two goals and assisted Vollrath in her only goal of the night.

On defense, South did what they do well as they produce their eighth clean sheet of the season. But not only did the War Eagles hold Lakeside to no goals, they held the Vikings to no shots.

“When you advance further in this tournament, it’s important for your team to play well on defense,” Braun said. “The fact that we can do that to a team like that is huge.”
