PREP ROUNDUP: West Forsyth baseball opens season with sweep, no-hitter

West Forsyth 6, Alexander 0;

West Forsyth 11, Sandy Creek 0

West Forsyth started its season Friday in dominant fashion, shutting out Alexander and Sandy Creek for a doubleheader sweep.

The Wolverines combined to no-hit Sandy Creek in the second game, as sophomore Brian Garmon II earned the win after four hitless inning, striking out five, and junior Andrew Maurer added a pair of strikeouts through one inning. 

Senior Luke Cartenuto went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in West Forsyth’s 6-0 win against Alexander, also striking out four batters across 1 2/3 innings. Senior Bryce Hawkins picked up the win for the Wolverines, tossing two innings of shutout ball, giving up two hits and striking out one.

The Wolverines (2-0) are back in action Saturday against Gainesville.

Riverwood 5, North Forsyth 4

North Forsyth held a 4-1 lead over Riverwood entering the fifth inning Friday, but the Raiders surrendered two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to drop their season opener 5-4.

Junior Jess Ackerman drew the start and struck out five batters across 2 1/3 innings, walking three and giving up one run on one hit. Sophomore Tyler Triche led North Forsyth at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 with a run scored, while senior Ty Morrison and sophomore Kaiden Ellis each drove in one run. 

Senior Garrett Sagro was charged with the loss after pitching 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and walking one.

The Raiders (0-1) are back in action Saturday against Alexander.

Buford 4, Lambert 0

The Longhorns gave up four runs in the first inning and only collected a single hit against the Wolves on Friday night.

Lambert's lone knock came courtesy of Nate Dvorsky, who reached on a single to lead off the top of the seventh inning.

Daniel Fischer took the loss for the Longhorns, allowing three earned runs on two hits with two walks. Jimmy Larson pitched four innings of relief, striking out two and walking two.

Lambert (1-1) is back in action at home against Marist on Saturday.

East Coweta 10, Forsyth Central 2

The Bulldogs were able to tie their season opener against East Coweta on Friday, but allowed six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, eventually taking a 10-2 loss on the road.

East Coweta took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but in the fourth, Central's Matthew Arundale hit a two-run home run to tie the game, scoring Will Nelms. The Indians responded quickly, though, collecting four hits and taking advantage of two walks and two errors to take an 8-2 lead. East Coweta scratched two more runs across in the sixth.

Arundale's home run was one of just two hits for Central, the other being a first-inning single from Stevie Lyons. Nicholas Holbrook was tabbed with the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Central (0-1) will travel to play Cartersville on Monday.

South Forsyth 12, Collins Hill 5;

Northview 10, South Forsyth 3

South began its 2020 season with a split on Friday, beating Collins Hill handily before falling to Northview in the same fashion.

The War Eagles allowed a four-run third inning against Collins Hill, but were bolstered by the performances of Chris Dougherty and Andrew Kightlinger, who combined for three hits and five RBIs. South answered Collins Hills' big inning with a five-run third, followed by three- and two-run fifth and sixth innings to close the game out.

In its second game of the day, South was able to collect eight hits but weren't able to score enough runs to keep up, with Northview jumping out to a 9-1 lead in the fifth. Jacob Bateman and Brennan Hudson collected two hits apiece in the loss.

South (1-1) will host North Atlanta on Monday.

Denmark 6, Tift County 0

The Danes earned a shutout victory in their first game of the regular season against Tift County on Friday.

Dalton Hansard started the game for Denmark and earned the win, striking out four over his three innings of work, allowing no hits and no walks. Smaran Ramanathan followed that up with three strikeouts over four frames with five hits and one walk.

At the plate, Matthew Cassandra and Gray Wilson drove in two runs apiece, with Cassandra hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Wilson and Jack Kream had two hits each.

Denmark (1-0) will face Ola on Saturday.


Lambert 7, Walton 5

Lambert opened its season Friday with a 7-5 win against 2019 state champion Walton.

The win came nearly nine months after the Longhorns fell in the Class 7A state championship to Walton, 8-7.
