With polls officially coming to a close in Forsyth County at 7 p.m. for the Tuesday, Jan. 5 runoff election, now the waiting begins.

The runoff includes races for two seats for the U.S. Senate that have earned nationwide attention due to the election either potentially swinging control of the Senate to Democrats or Republicans retaining control and a race for a seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission between two candidates with Forsyth County ties.

Mandi Smith, director of Forsyth County's Department of Voter Registrations and Elections, said, like the Nov. 3 general election, early voting has been popular in the runoff and election day turnout has been even busier.

"As of now, with the stats that the polls are periodically calling in, more ballots have been cast on Election Day for this Runoff than were cast on Election Day in the November General Election," Smith said.

Smith said Forsyth County had 63,332 residents vote early in the runoff.

Statewide, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a news release the runoff was "running smoothly throughout the state with no reports of long lines" other than a brief issue in Columbia County on Tuesday morning.

“After wait times averaging just 2 minutes on November 3rd, Georgia’s election administration is hitting a new milestone for effectiveness and efficiency,” said Raffensperger. “I have always said that after every election, half the people will be happy and half will be disappointed, but everyone should be confident in the reliability of the results.”
